Challenges in Diversity (IV)

About the congress

Languages and varieties in displacement: documentation and revitalization with social justice

Challenges in Diversity is an international, transdisciplinary congress centred on Indigenous and minoritized languages and the communities that keep them alive. Its fourth edition, held in Quito, continued a series of meetings that began in 2011.

This time the focus was on what happens to languages when their speakers are on the move, and on how documentation and revitalization can help dismantle linguistic stigma and discrimination, building fairer societies.

Researchers, teachers, students, activists and community members from many countries shared their experience and lessons learned, and built bridges towards lasting action that strengthens languages and cultures.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

What is a Humboldt Kolleg?

A Humboldt Kolleg is a scientific meeting organized outside Germany by researchers who were once fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Foundation funds it so that the Humboldt network can grow and connect within each region.

  • It brings a region’s researchers together around a shared topic.
  • It makes room for early-career researchers and new collaborations.
  • In 2023, Quito hosted the Kolleg devoted to linguistic diversity.
