She holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is mainly interested in second language acquisition and teaching, as well as in Latin American studies. Her research areas include sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and language contact. She has conducted research related to Spanish-Quechua contact in Peru; and Quechua-Spanish bilingualism.
